I personally wanted to move this pick up in my top three or four moments of the year but because of other events still left to post and their importance and impact on the year, I was not allowed to.
But my pick for the #6 Sports Moment of 2008 is a personal fave:
The Tampa Bay Rays & The World Series
I mentioned once before that I felt bad for the Philadelphia Phillies, even though they won the World Series. Because, who cared? Now, wait, I don’t mean Philly doesn’t have Phans because they have some great Phanatics! But, the significance of their win and how it ended their own losing draught was lost because the Tampa Bay Rays story was so much more exciting! And in almost every year-in-sports-review I have found, the Rays were mentioned. And the Phillies were thrown in as an afterthought of “oh yeah, by the way…Philly won.” And it won’t get much better here because we are in TB so we were: Tampa Bay All The Way!
I’m not going to really get into the story here because I have an excellent piece (I’m not too biased, I swear….) that I prepared in October about the Rays. So in short, it is a fantastic sports moment of the year because the Rays went from being the worst team (the last 9 out of 10 years that they have been around) to a team in the World Series! It was exciting to see it happen!

a small snippet from my original post
I feel bad for the Phillies, I really do. See, in any other World Series, they would probably be the Cinderella team. They would be the underdogs, the ones we want to go to to the ball and get the crown. But unfortunately, there is a new princess in town and they are younger, hotter and seem a bit more magical. It’s like someone showed up at the ball you are hosting wearing the same dress as you. I don’t know about you, but I would be pissed if I was the Phillies. After 10,000 losses, it eally should be them in the spotlight. I have a feeling they are going to fight with a venegance to win this Series because instead of being Cinderella, it really is like they are the Evil Queen.
