My #4 pick for Sports Moments of the year is…

the NBA Finals and the Boston Celtics.

And I swear it’s not because my dad is making me!

Why I’m picking it:

  • It was the franchise’s first championship in 22 years, since the last great Celtics Dynasty in the 1980s.
  • The win was franchise’s 17th NBA championship, an NBA record
  • The Celtic’s entire playoff series was exciting to watch (believe me, I was forced to watch every single game even when other good shows were on tv!). Both Round 1 against the Atlanta Hawks and Round 2 against the Cleveland Cavaliers went to a nail-biting 7 games. And it took 6 grueling games against the Detriot Pistons for the C’s to win the Eastern Conference Championships to even get to the Finals.
  • The Finals pitted the Celtics against their arch-rivals the L.A. Lakers. The long-standing and often bitter feud dates back to 1959 when the Lakers were still based in Minneapolis! That year, the  Celtics swept the Lakers in the Finals. The C’s then went on to win 8 Championships in a row–and beat the Lakers 6 times during that streak. Going into the 2008 Finals, the C’s and the Lakers had met 10 times in the Finals and the Lakers had only won twice.
  • The 2008 series went on for 6 games and ended with a….Boston Massacre, if you will. The Celtics stomping the Lakers in a 131-92 win in Boston. The last time a team got beat that badly in the Finals was in 1998 when the Chicago Bulls destroyed the Utah Jazz by 42 points.
  • The Championship revealed the new Boston Dynasty, or Boston Three-Party as Sportscenter coined them, of Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen. And this makes me so happy Pierce and Allen are ones I used to watch play college ball!
