For all of you who missed the Patriots/Colts game last week (or went to bed early) you missed one heck of a game! It actually lived up to–and surpassed–all the hype around the matchup that pitted two of the NFL’s best QBs against each other.

This week’s match-ups are not as thrilling, but some are more key than others. At least in my world.

My NFL games of the week are:

  1. New England Patriots vs. New York Jets (4:15 p.m.)
  2. Philadelphia Eagles vs. Chicago Bears (8:20 p.m.)
  3. and of course, Arizona Cardinals vs. St Louis Rams because I love watching the Cards play. (4:05 p.m.)

I kinda hate to feature the Patriots again since they were my choice for GOTW last week, but there was no way around it because once again, all eyes will be on their game. Okay, MY eyes will be on that game.

So, why is the New England Patriots/New York Jets game so key?

For Sports Fans:tom brady patriots

  1. If you like the Jets, you hate the Pats. If you like the Pats, well, the Jets are kinda like a mildly annoying gnat always buzzing around you that you try to ignore, but it keeps pestering you. So you keep swatting at it.
  2. The Jets have already defeated the Patriots once this year.
  3. However….. in that game, New England’s star reciever Wes Welker (yum, btw!) was out of commission and this time around he is back.
  4. And New England’s QB Tom Brady (double yum!) had just returned from injury and wasn’t up to his full game yet. He is now. Big time. (for more on Wes Welker and his impact on the Pats, see this great ESPN article about why Wes Welker is the Patriots MVP.PATRIOTS WELKER
  5. New England’s not so happy to have lost to the Indianapolis Colts last weekend. They are going to come out swinging. And Brady can’t be thrilled that he lost the QB Duel against Peyton Manning so he is going to be looking to absolutely crush New York’s rookie QB Mark Sanchez (triple yum!)
  6. The Jets need this win BADLY. They started this season with a certain swagger led by Sanchez. And then they seemed to realize, he may not really know what he is doing yet…. he’s still new to the NFL. And since their 3-0 start of the season, they have now gone 1-5.20090814_jab_g53_409.jpg

For Me:

Well, for all those reasons just listed AND….

  1. Because I happen to like both the Pats and the Jets. Yes, I know that is not allowed. It’s like, liking the Red Sox and the Yankees and the Rays. Which I also do. Hey, don’t yell at me. Yell at my family, friends and upbringing. I’m a New Yorker with family that loves all things Boston and New England. And friends that are die hard I LOVE NEW YORK EVERYTHING.
    • 80% of my friends love the Giants.
    • 9% love the Pats (and that 5% is weighed heavily because they are my favorite people)
    • 9% love the Jets (and that is weighed heavily because they are immediate family. And my boss.)
    • and the other 2% wouldn’t know a football if it hit them in the head.
    • Clearly, it is in my  best interest to stay neutral and like them all.
  2. Because anytime there is one super hot QB playing against another super hot QB, I am a very, very, very happy girl. And you don’t get much hotter than Mark Sanchez and Tom Brady. I’m just saying….we all like a little eye candy every now and again, and this game has plenty of it.

The Stats:

Team Stats:

Stats                                     Jets                                 Patriots

Win-Loses 4-5                                         6-3
Home Games W-L 2-3                                         5-0
Road Games W-L: 2-2                                         1-3
Division Games W-L: 1-3                                          2-1

Why are these stats important?

The key stat is that the Patriots are undefeated (5-0) at home this year and this game is taking place in their home. Also, the Jets have only managed to win 1 game when playing other teams in their division. Then again, that 1 game was against the Patriots!

Tom Brady vs. Mark Sanchez

brady82122406MW063_Ohio_State_v_

STATS                                           Sanchez                          Brady

Attempted Passes: 244                                     352
Completed Passes: 130*                                     233*
Total Yards: 1655                                      2739
Touchdowns: 9                                                 19

*So Sanchez has completed 53% of his passes compared to Brady’s 66%. Brady has also led to 10 more touchdowns than Sanchez and accumulated 1,000 more yards! Those are big stats.

What to Expect from today’s matchup:

  • The New England Patriots to come out hard, tough and angry. They are all pissed and embarrassed about their loss to the Colts last week. If you haven’t heard, their coach Bill Belichick (pronounced Bell-ah-check) basically declared to the whole NFL watching world that he was scared of Peyton Manning and didn’t think his team could handle it. Needless to say, the team is not too pleased by that and wants to show the NFL watching world that they can kick some ass.
  • The New York Jets to be scrappy. They are playing for their lives here. You think Bill Belichek’s move was embarassing? Well the Jets’ coach Rex Ryan basically balled his eyes out to his team begging them to win because it’s crushing his soul. Sounds like someone needs Tom Hanks to come yell at him and say “there is no crying in football!” In any case, they want to make a run for the last weeks of the season and it needs to start with this game!
  • Twitter to be alive with the names: Tom Brady, Randy Moss, Wes Welker, Mark Sanchez, Belichick, Rex Ryan, mark sanchez no shirt
  • @ExtremeJohn cursing violently and becoming very irate on all social media outlets. Unless the Jets are winning, of course.
  • Me drooling on myself with all the eye candy.

MY PICK:

Ah, ya know, I think I’m going to go with the Jets today. Why not? I have a soft spot for Mark Sanchez’s hard abs, talent. And my boss implied that if I root against the Jets I’m not welcome at his Sunday Funday party. And that he may be forced to fire me for my act of treason against his team.

So who are you picking? Leave me a comment below or send me a tweet @StilettoSportsJ! And let me know what you are making for your Sunday Funday football party! I’ve added some recipes below for this big matchup!

——————————————————-

All our loyal readers know that for the last few weeks we have been giving you some amazing recipes for football parties! Everything from NFL Team Inspired Cocktails to unique dips and chicken wings. And last week I threw in some recipes for my Week 10 key Matchup: Patriots/Colts and you guys gobbled them up! So I’ve decided to add some more for this week’s key games!

PreGame:

  1. New England Patriots Cranberry Almond Kicker
  2. New York Jets: The Big Apple-tini

New England Patriots Cranberry Almond Kicker

  • 2 cups cranberry juice cocktail
  • 1 cup vodka
  • 1/2 cup amaretto
  • 3 tablespoons fresh orange juice*
  • Ice cubes
  • Clementines, peeled, separated into segments (optional)
  • * Mix cranberry juice, vodka, amaretto, and orange juice in pitcher. Let chill for a little while to blend flavors. Add vodka. Shake it up, serve!

New York Jets appletiniBig Apple Tini

  • 1 oz Smirnoff® Green Apple Twist vodka
  • 1 oz Midori® melon liqueur
  • 1 oz sweet and sour mix
  • Add ingredients to a cocktail shaker shaker half-filled with ice cubes. Shake well. Strain into cocktail glass, and serve.

First Quarter:

I’m going to also recommend last week’s Double Hottie Cheese & Almond Dip since once again this match-up features two delicious quarterbacks……but for the Pats-Jets game, I think the perfect Dip recipe is actually:

Reuben Dip reuben dip

Reubens capture the essence of both New York and the Boston area, at least in my head. As you will see with my half-time burger choices, when I think of New York I think of hot pastrami and hot corned beef sandwiches. And when I think of anything Boston, I think Irish. And then my mind wanders to St Paddy’s Day festivities and of course, corned beef and reubens! This dip takes all the yummy goodness of a reuben (corned beef, cheese, sauerkraut and thousand island dressing) and blends it all up into one tasty bite! Get the recipe!

Second Quarter

  1. Garlic Parmesan Wings: The other thing I think of when I think New York is Little Italy and the Sopranos. Maybe it’s because I’m Italian. Or maybe because you can’t get a good slice of pizza if Florida so I dream about them. In any case, when I think Italian, I think parmesan cheese and garlic! And hey, if you’re a Pats fan and you want a special wing just for them, check out my recipes from last week! These wings are rich, oozing with butter and packed with parm cheese and garlic…YUM! The recipe doesn’t specify cooking method. I prefer to batter mine up, fry for a hot second, and then pop in the oven to finish them off. Then I cover them with the garlic sauce at the end. I have tried them “naked” or without breading and they were just as yummy. But I figure, if I’m doing wings, I’m going all out! (PS–the link includes a bunch of recipes from Buffalo Wild Wings!) Get the recipe!

Half-Time

Half-time is the perfect time to step away from the TV for a hot minute and get things cooking on the grill! And what football party is complete without burgers?

The New England Patriots “Best Burger Ever” I found this burger recipe called “The Best Burger Recipe Ever” and I thought that it would be the perfect burger for the Patriots since many consider them to be the best NFL team ever….. (I know, cocky words. But Pats fans are kinda like Yankees fans, they don’t just think they are the best, they know they are the best) sam adams burgerBut beyond the boastful claim, this burger also features Sam Adams beer, a New England tradition for years.

  • 1lb of Ground Beef  (Must be PRIME Grade A)  The quality of the beef could be the most important factor.  Spend the money, you will not regret it.
  • 1 minced onion (I like the pieces to be a little thicker)
  • 2 teaspoons of garlic salt
  • 1 teaspoon of Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon of tabasco sauce
  • 1 quick pour of  Sam Adams Beer
  • 2 tablespoons of Honey Mustard
  • 2 egg yolkes
  • dash of salt and pepper

Mix all the ingredients up with your hands.  Shape into thick large oval burgers.  Cook on Grill until temperature reaches medium.  Top with Cheddar cheese and melt breifly.

New York Jets Burger When I think of New York food, well, first I drool all over myself. Then I think of thick pastrami or corned beef sandwiches, topped with all the trimmings. Now you can recreate the feel of a reuben with this open-faced New York Style Reuben Burger! The burger is served on rye bread, covered in cheese and sauerkraut and thousand island dressing. Yum, Yum Yum!

new york jets reuben burger

  • 1 small onion, sliced
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 pound lean ground beef or ground chuck
  • 4 slices rye bread
  • 8 to 16 ounces sauerkraut, drained and rinsed
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese
  • Thousand Island Dressing, optional
  • dill pickle slices, optional

Preparation:

Sauté the onion slices in butter; set aside. Shape ground beef into four patties; fry in skillet or broil to desired doneness, turning to evenly brown. Place hamburger patties on the rye bread slices on a broiler rack. Top burgers with sauerkraut, onion, and cheese. Broil until cheese is melted. Serve with Thousand Island dressing or pickle slices if desired.

Fourth Quarter:

New York Style Carmel Apple Cheesecake:Forget reubens, forget pizza, forget Italian food. Nothing says NY like a NY style cheesecake…. except one that combines fall apples. I’m an upstate NY girl and my favorite thing about fall was apple picking. So combining one of New York’s signature crops with their signature dessert is a guaranteed win!

New York Caramel Apple Cheesecake

New England: I have two regional favorite recipes to share with you for New England, both of which I grew up on–at least every summer when we would head to Cape Cod. They are Indian Pudding and Grape Nuts Pudding. Yes, Grape Nuts like the cereal. My mother would be thrilled that I’m spreading those dishes on to you because loved both of them! And both recipes are very seasonal right now. Indian Pudding is hot, filling and has all the flavors of the season like nutmeg, molasses and cinnamon. And Grape Nuts Pudding is like a thick yummy custard!

  1. Mike Said,

I don’t get the yum references when you’re talking about the players, but the food looks pretty delicious.

The Jets and the Pats are nothing like the Yankees and the Red Sox. It’s more like the Mets and the Red Sox.

  2. Extreme John Said,

I had every intention of coming here and going bananas because you mention being fans of both teams, that was until I saw all the excellent menu items that you will be bringing over today.

With that being said please bring your ear plugs, I am probably in for a long one all though I think the Jets can still pull it off (die hard moron).

Thank you for the link juice.

The Los Angeles Lakers’ signing of Andrew Bogut drew plenty of reactions from both sides of the fence but his veteran status makes him an asset on the court and the bench.

Reasons why baseball has bigger money power than football

Baseball attracts millions of spectators, and it makes the largest amounts of money throughout the world. It is the main hero of sports pages of American newspapers, one of the main characters of books and movies. The famous baseball player of the 1940s Joe DiMaggio was no less popular than his starry wife Marilyn Monroe was. Baseball is a […]
