Roller skating is both a fun leisure activity to get into and a challenging sport – and exercise – to keep your body healthy. It is making a comeback and growing in popularity in recent years, especially with more skating rinks now catering to skating fans across the country.

Roller skating is also an easy sport to get into. There are a few things to prepare and some basic training to complete before you can engage in more advanced activities such as roller derby, but we are going to discuss the basics in this article to help you get started.

Getting Your Gear
Now that roller skating is becoming more popular, shopping for the right gear is easier as well. Many sports equipment stores and retailers now carry a wide range of roller skates and safety equipment for beginners. You can shop for the gear you need to get started online too.

You need three main things before you can start practicing your skating skills. First, you need a pair of roller skates that suit you. There are different types available on the market, along with multiple designs and different feature sets. Derby skates and rink or speed skates, for example, are different to each other.

You have the option to buy the roller skate boots and wheels separately too. This is a good route to take if you want to be able to customize your skates from the start. Alternatively, you can search for roller skates for women or men to find great kits that you can wear out of the box.

Next, you need safety gear. A helmet and a set of safety pads are usually enough, although there are other items you can pick up to make practicing a bit safer. Don’t forget to pick up a bag for all of your new equipment too.

Learning the Posture
Before you start skating, the first and most important thing to master is the posture. You have to be able to stand properly wearing the skates. To start, place your feet about a shoulder-width apart and bend your knees slightly. Lean forward until you find a comfortable position that allows you to balance yourself in your skates.

Let me be the first to tell you that you will fall at least a couple of times. It is part of the learning process.

Go Skating!
The last bit is the fun part: skating. The rink is a great place to practice. There are usually some experienced skaters ready to help you get back on your feet when you fall. Focus on getting comfortable and balancing yourself on the rink, and then learn to do the duck-walk; this is where you point your feet outwards so that you can walk at a slow pace.

After mastering the duck walk, you can start learning how to glide in your skates. Complete the cycle by learning how to stop after a glide and how to use the front brakes safely. The rest is downhill from there; you just have to practice more to get better.
