Dicky V says goodbye to the NCAA…for a night

My favorite sports talk of the day has to be about tonight’s basketball commentators. Some would call it a Switcheroo-Dunk-a-Doo. Well, there is one guy in the world that probably would call it that. And that would be Hall-of-Famer, the legendary NCAA commentator, Dick Vitale!

But tonight, according to ESPN.com Dicky V leaves college basketball

ESPN’s NBA and college basketball commentators will switch roles Wednesday during a special basketball doubleheader. Mike Tirico and analysts Mark Jackson and Jeff Van Gundy will call Davidson at Duke at 7 p.m. ET, and then Dan Shulman and Hall of Famer Dick Vitale will provide commentary for the Miami Heat at Denver Nuggets game at 9 p.m. (both games on ESPN).

It’s gonna be awesome, baby!

Why does anyone care? Well you have to know this guy. Well, I care because I just found out that he lives about five minutes from my house here in Sunny Sarasota. Everyone else cares because he is Mr. NCAA Basketball. Plus he is over excited, over caffeinated, and over-the-top. If you don’t know this man, your eardrums don’t know what they are missing.

We once likened him to Rosie O’Donnell and her love of Tom Cruise but the more I think about it, the more I’ve decided he is the Richard Simmons of college basketball announcing: so downright crazy that you either love him or truly hate him, but either way you will be cringing with laughter.

What does Dicky V think about the switcheroo?

“It should be loads of fun to see Dwyane Wade, a guy I labeled as a diaper dandy when he was a collegian. As I’ve told many media members, he is no longer a diaper dandy, but a Rolls Royce superstar at the next level and in life.”

To decipher this, please head to: The Dick Vitale Dictionary. Seriously. If you plan on watching the Heat/Nuggets game tonight I highly recommend reading the dictionary provided by ESPN so you have a clue what this man is talking about! (Don’t believe me? Do you know how Strawberry Shortcake, Pac Man and the M&M man relate to basketball?)

Having him announce and NBA game will be like…hmmm….a pre-school teacher suddenly teaching high school. “Ok my little diaper dandies, lets take out your pencil-wencils and slam, jam, bam that test!”

Maybe I shouldn’t do analogies before the cofffee kicks in.

On the other side, Mark Jackson and Jeff Van Gundy head to announce the Duke/Davidson college basketball game but who cares about that?  I mean look at these guys, how much fun can they be?

Jackson, Van Gundy and other boring guy in the middle. Kidding....

Jackson doesn’t even sound exciting:

“I’m so excited to have the opportunity to cover a college game this week and especially a big game like Duke-Davidson. I’m a huge college basketball fan, and having the opportunity to watch a game in Cameron is one I’m extremely grateful for. I’m going to be like a kid in a toy store before, during and after this game.” Blah blah blah

All I know is that I’m actually going to tape Top Chef and actually watch NBA basketball tonight just to see what great phrases Dicky V will come up with for the NBA.

Take Me Out To Any Ball Game!

I’m such a passionate sports fan but I’ve only been to a few pro games. It’s a slight oxymoron to me. ”Yeah! Go sports! As long as I’m sitting at my desk!”
