Stiletto Report’s Top Sports Moment of 2008!
Posted by Stiletto Jen On January - 1 - 2009

The wait is over! It’s finally time to give the stiletto trophy for my #1 favorite sports moment of the year! Yay! It was really hard to choose with all those fantastic momentsI’ve already talked about. I mean, no matter what I picked as #1, I was bound to piss off someone. My dad wanted the Celtics; Mike wanted the Yankees; Charlie was for Kansas; most of the fam picked Michael Phelps; Gina felt I didn’t give the Giants enough attention.

I learned a lot in the last week but my biggest lesson was that you can’t please everyone. So in this case I didn’t even try! I figure I might as well piss everyone off and amuse myself at the same time!

Over the last 85 years Yankee Stadium has become one of the most iconic and beloved structures in all sports history. Now we say goodbye to Baseball’s Cathedral.
My pick for the #2 Sports Moment of 2008 is The Collapse of the House that Ruth Built. The end of Yankee Stadium.
I want to be very clear that I am just talking about the poignant ending and it’s significance to the history of baseball. I, in no way, support even the idea of this new stadium and think it was 1. the biggest waste of money besides all these bailouts and 2. pointless destruction of a symbolic and historic structure that meant so much to so many people.

I am very happy to bring you my #3 Pick for Top Sports Moments of 2008:

Kansas wins the NCAA Basketball Tournament

because you have no idea how long I’ve waited for that to happen. I love their program so much that I will actually admit to owning and wearing my Kansas Jayhawk jersey that I bought in the late 1990’s when Steve Woodberry was on the team. And it figures the one year I wasn’t able to do my brackets and pick them to win, they won!

The NBA Finals and the Boston Celtics are my pick for #4 and not because my dad is making me put it on here! It truly was amazing!
The Celtic’s entire playoff series was exciting to watch (believe me, I was forced to watch every single game even when other good shows were on tv!). Both Round 1 against the Atlanta Hawks and Round 2 against the Cleveland Cavaliers went to a nail-biting 7 games. And it took 6 grueling games against the Detriot Pistons for the C’s to win the Eastern Conference Championships to even get to the Finals.

I’m almost afraid to post this at #5 for the potential backlash because it should be higher on the countdown. But, I have other moments that were really special to me so he’s getting the #5 spot. And hey, 5 is my fave number so it’s almost like being #1 in my world…..

Michael Phelps. Why?

Um, eight gold medals in a single Olympics. Which surpassed the previous record of 7 set by Mark Spitz in 1972. Do you really need another reason? Okay. How about…

I’ve been a Tiger fan since he stepped on the green– before I even actually liked watching the game of golf! Love him or hate him, it’s been undeniable for years that he is a truly remarkable golfer and athlete. He did to golf what Michael Jordan did to basketball: completely transformed it (Note: Not what Michael Jordan did to golf. Do not misread that!)

And 2008 brought a whole new level to his magic–and he only played six events!

A Giant Victory: The play of the game of Superbowl XLII (42 if you don’t know Roman numerals. 2008 if you have no idea how many years there have been Superbowls)

I can’t say no one expected the NY Giants to win the 2008 Superbowl because I have no idea if that is even true. To be honest, I barely remember the Superbowl at all (I know there was some really yummy snacks and drinks) but one thing is clear to me: the play of the game.
Top moments are so subjective. My dad thinks the Celtics should be #1, my brother said Michael Phelps. I think it should be Kansas. But in this instance, there is no denying that this was the play of the game:

Wimbledon Final: Roger Federer vs. Rafael Nader. The greatest tennis match ever played! Yay! Exciting!
Oh who am I trying to kid? Anyone who is not a tennis fan is thinking the same thing that I am….so what? How exciting could it have been. Sure it could be the best but it’s still a tennis match, the most boring thing to watch on t.v. Hmm…It’s kinda like watching my cat watch birds fly by outside without the “Ugh! Whap. Ugh! Whap. Ugh! Whap.” noises.

Signing Andrew Bogut Was A Win-Win Situation For The Los Angeles Lakers

The Los Angeles Lakers’ signing of Andrew Bogut drew plenty of reactions from both sides of the fence but his veteran status makes him an asset on the court and the bench.

How to Get Started with Roller Skating

Reasons why baseball has bigger money power than football

Baseball attracts millions of spectators, and it makes the largest amounts of money throughout the world. It is the main hero of sports pages of American newspapers, one of the main characters of books and movies. The famous baseball player of the 1940s Joe DiMaggio was no less popular than his starry wife Marilyn Monroe was. Baseball is a […]
