Over the last 85 years Yankee Stadium has become one of the most iconic and beloved structures in all sports history. Now we say goodbye to Baseball’s Cathedral.
My pick for the #2 Sports Moment of 2008 is The Collapse of the House that Ruth Built. The end of Yankee Stadium.
However…
I want to be very clear that I am just talking about the poignant ending and it’s significance to the history of baseball. I, in no way, support even the idea of this new stadium and think it was 1. the biggest waste of money besides all these bailouts and 2. pointless destruction of a symbolic and historic structure that meant so much to so many people.

Michael Jordan’s “Be Legendary” series for Nike is so well done that I get chills when I watch them. It’s hard to pick which one is my favorite but I think I’m going with the fourth one in the series because that is the one that made me move this pick up from #4 to #2 on the Top Sports Commercial Countdown:

Kansas wins the NCAA Basketball Tournament

because you have no idea how long I’ve waited for that to happen. I love their program so much that I will actually admit to owning and wearing my Kansas Jayhawk jersey that I bought in the late 1990′s when Steve Woodberry was on the team. And it figures the one year I wasn’t able to do my brackets and pick them to win, they won!

My pick for the #3 spot on my Top Sports Commercials Countdown are my fave Superbowl XLII commercials! There is one that stands out as my absolute favorite but I did find two other good runners-up that I thought I would share!

My Personal Favorite:

Bud-wies-er. The Clydesdales Series

The ad series follow the story of some of the most prestigious and famous horses in the country, the Budweiser Clydesdales

The NBA Finals and the Boston Celtics are my pick for #4 and not because my dad is making me put it on here! It truly was amazing!
The Celtic’s entire playoff series was exciting to watch (believe me, I was forced to watch every single game even when other good shows were on tv!). Both Round 1 against the Atlanta Hawks and Round 2 against the Cleveland Cavaliers went to a nail-biting 7 games. And it took 6 grueling games against the Detriot Pistons for the C’s to win the Eastern Conference Championships to even get to the Finals.

My Pick for the #4 spot in my Top Sports Commercial Countdown is

Visa: Go World.

The Olymics have always provided us with so many compelling and captivating moments and the one featured in Visa’s commercial was especially poignant. Visa, with the narration from Morgan Freeman, recounted the story of Derek Redmond and his heartbreaking finish in the 1992 Olympics

I love T-Mobile’s Charles Barkley-Dwayne Wade series. Funny enough to make into my fave five!
The T-Mobile commercial aired during the 2008 Superbowl and featured Barkley finally allowing NBA star Dwayne Wade into his elite “fave five” on his phone, something Wayne had been trying to do for awhile! The series had been going on for awhile:

I’m almost afraid to post this at #5 for the potential backlash because it should be higher on the countdown. But, I have other moments that were really special to me so he’s getting the #5 spot. And hey, 5 is my fave number so it’s almost like being #1 in my world…..

Um, eight gold medals in a single Olympics. Which surpassed the previous record of 7 set by Mark Spitz in 1972. Do you really need another reason? Okay. How about…

I chose a Nike ad for my #6 pick for Top Sports Commercials for #08 but then realized I couldn’t pick just one. I’m going to stick with two of my favorites NFL related clips: It’s not just a game and Fate, Leave Nothing. Though I’m sure I’ll find more later and have to do a whole post on Nike ads alone!

The Cinderella Story of the losers of the World Series. Which everyone agrees is far more exciting than then winner’s tale!
