Is it just me or did the Super Bowl XLIV Commercials totally suck…. yet again? I swear it’s a case of trying to hard. These advertisers spend millions and millions on these ads…… and spend all year coming up with a great concept to top everyone…… and it shows. The ads are overworked, under-edited and just plain stupid.

Out of about 80 ads, there were only 11 that stood out to me this year! You can see them all in the Hulu Widget below. If for some reason the widget is not working go here to see them on Hulu.

1. Mark Sanchez CBS “Heart” Yes, I am biased since I heart him but you have no idea how awesome that commercial was on my bosses movie theater sized screen and mega-surround sound. By far my fave ad of the super bowl. The sexiest man in the NFL standing there saying “This is the sound of my heart beating. You are important to me… especially if you watch football.” I drool just thinking about it
2. Bud Light “T-Pain Voice Box” Remnicient of the old skool Bud Light “Wazzzup!” ads that were so awesome! This ad cracked us all up. Very well done!
3. Doritos “Playing Nice” Doritos took over the Super Bowl with their ads. I don’t even want to know how many bags they would need to sell to cover the cost for all their ads….. And for the most part, they weren’t that great. But “Playing Nice” was hysterical! It had a little kid laying down the law to his mom’s date.  “Don’t look at my mom. Don’t touch my Doritos”
4. Career Builder “Casual Fridays” There are no words for this….. A whole lot of ugly people in their underwear. It’s priceless.
5. Google Search On This was one of the best commercials I have ever seen. I thought it was extremely well done. Very simple, but very powerful.
6. ETrade Baby: “Girlfriend” The ETrade Baby can do no wrong in my world. All of his ads amuse me and this one was pretty freaking funny. Etrade baby gets a girlfriend who gets jealous of another girl. You thought Shankapotamus was funny? You gotta check out the “Milk-aholic”
7. Dodge Charger “Man’s Last Stand” Okay I was a bit disappointed when I found out it was a car commercial because the ad was seriously funny. But the more I thought about it, the more appropriate it seems. The guys in the ad are being voiced over with their thoughts—all the things they sacrifice while being in a committed relationship. But the one thing they won’t give up…..their car. Best line “I’ll watch your vampire tv shows with you”
8. Hyundai “Brett Favre” Gotta love when a player can be self deprecating and mocking himself! It’s 20 years in the future and Brett is still playing football at 59 and still not sure he is ready to retire!
9. Volkswagon Das Auto “Punch Buggy” Remember the old Punch Buggy game? Every time you see a Volkswagon Bug you punch someone in the arm and declare the color of the car you saw? Well, welcome to the 2010 version! With 13 Volkswagon models, Punch Buggy becomes a whole new game!
10. Budweiser Clydesdales: Calf Grows Up Baby ponies and calfs! How can you not love it! The pony and the cow are BFF growing up and then the Pony grows up to be a clydesdale and goes away. But when he returns to town, the cow remembers their friendship and they are reunited!
11. Tru TV “Punxsutawney Polamalu” Yes, this ad is beyond stupid. But I don’t care, I get the giggles like crazy every time I see it. Instead of pulling out a groundhog, the mayor pulls out a little Polamalu, complete with curly fro. Polamalu sees his shadow which means 6 more weeks of football on Tru TV!

There was a semi entertaining ad by Snickers that featured Betty White. Some are saying it’s going to be “the” commercial. But *shrug* it didn’t make my list!

The Super Bowl XLIV Commercial Awards:

Best Use of a Hot Guy In a PSA: Mark Sanchez Heart Commercial. Tim Tebow’s highly “controversial” and anticipated ad pretty much sucked. The hype was more exciting than the few second commercial. Mark’s commercial was so much better. I drooled a little.

Best use of tighty whities in an ad Career Builder “Casual Fridays”

Runner up is the Dockers, “I wear no pants” commercial. Which would have been funnier if it hadn’t aired right after the no pants Career Builder commercial. By then, the room was a little sick of seeing ugly men in no pants.

Best Anheiser Busch Commercial:

For Bud Light– T-Pain Voice Box.

For Budweiser Clydesdales “Calf Grows Up” Definitely a sweet commercial. I’m a sucker for the Clydesdale series of commercials!

Best Doritos Commercial “Playing Nice/House Rules”

Best “awwwwwwwwwww!” Commercial: Tie. Google “Search On” and Budweiser Clydesdales “Calf Grows Up”

Best Throwback Commercial Volkswagon Punch Buggy

Boost Mobile tried to win this with the “Super Bowl Shuffle” but I didn’t think it was funny. It kinda made me sleepy. The punch buggy, however, that was hysterical.

Best NFL Star Mocking Himself in a Super Bowl Ad Hyundai “Brett Favre”

Biggest Letdown Commercial Cars.com “Timothy Richmond”

There were actually a lot of these ads. The ones that seemed so good, couldn’t wait to see what the product was….. and then they sucked.  Cars.com was definitely the worst. It was a loooooong ad and you kept thinking, I wonder where this is going……. and then….. it went.

Super Bowl XLIV being the biggest party day—and biggest drinking holiday—of the year, it seemed only appropriate that we do a Super Bowl XLIV Drinking Game!

I got this idea from one of my all time favorite blogs, 2 Birds 1 Blog. They do a Drinking Game Friday post almost weekly and they always crack me up!

Maybe you just go to the Super Bowl party because, well, you never miss a party, even a football themed one! Maybe you just watch the Super Bowl for the commercials. Maybe you are just watching the game so you get something awesome next week for Valentine’s Day.

It doesn’t matter why you are watching the big game or going to the Super Bowl party, but it does matter what you know about the big game!

LemonDrop.com had a hilarious quote about people that show up to a football party without a clue:”You may not know your Butkus from your Ditka, but you don’t want to interrupt someone’s SuperBowl haze to ask who’s playing. That’s like asking how the people got on the island during the season finale of ‘Lost.’”

This was actually the first year I was really into the NFL all season long. Normally I would tune out for 17 weeks and then check out the post season. But I always made sure to know a little about the Big Game because I know there is nothing worse than being at a party with someone that doesn’t have a clue about anything…. unless you are the one at the party that doesn’t have a clue!

You don’t have to sit down and read the advanced NFL Rulebook or anything! But you should definitely know some of the basics like what teams are playing and who to watch on the field! You don’t want to suddenly ask who Peyton Manning is or why people are yelling “Dat!” at a dog who’s bark sounds suspicously like “Who?”

To help you, we went through and picked out 44 key things to know about Super Bowl XLIV, aka Super Bowl Number 44. Obviously there are probably 200 more things that could be on this list but, well, we want to save some time for the Party! We broke them down into sections for easy reading!

The Big Game

I.  The Super Bowl is in Miami (Go ahead, sing it. You know you want to. “Party in the city where the heat is on, all night on the beach till the break of dawn. Welcome to Miami, Bienvenido a Miami”)

II. The Big Game kicks off at 6:30 p.m. EST on February 7, 2010 on CBS.

III. The official pre-game starts 4 hours before the Big Game. But analysis will be on from the crack of dawn…. Super Bowl Parties usually start around 1:00 p.m.

IV. Chris Daughtry (@Chris_Daughtry) performs at 3:45 p.m. And it will be on CBS!!!!

V. The Who is performing at Halftime. The Who, featuring Roger Daltry, not to be confused with Chris Daughtry….. The NFL continues on their spree of having old school legendary artists (aka old people) in the halftime show to make sure there is no chance of boobs popping out…

The Teams in the Big Game

VI. The Indianapolis Colts vs. The New Orleans Saints One of the most anticipated matchups for a Super Bowl because both teams were outstanding all season and it pits two of the leagues best QBs against each other. The New Orleans Saints Battle cry from the fans is “Who Dat!” and you will definitely be hearing it, over and over and over……

VII. The Quarterbacks: Peyton Manning (Indianapolis) & Drew Brees (New Orleans).

• Peyton was born and raised in New Orleans and his dad actually used to play for the Saints
• Drew went to school at Purdue, in Indiana.
• From NFL Fan House “Purdue is less than an hour from Indianapolis and there are thousands and thousands of avid Colts fans who also happen to love their Boilers. It will be a bittersweet feeling for them to root against their once-beloved No. 15.”  and on the other hand….”The Manning family is revered in the New Orleans area. Peyton and his brothers were an integral part in Hurricane Katrina relief back in 2005.”

VIII. The Colts Name Dropping: Joseph Addai, Reggie Wayne, Dallas Clark, Pierre Garcon, Hank Baskett……because his wife is Kendra from Girls Next Door.

IX. The Saints Name Dropping: Reggie Bush, Jeremy Shockey, Kim Kardashian. Yes, you read that right. You will probably hear her name a whole lot of times. She is Reggie Bush’s girlfriend.

X.  And the Kicker is.…. High pressure games like this often come down to last second end zone catches or last minute field goal attempts. It’s good to know the kickers for each team because they are absolutely critical to success.

• Matt Stover  (Colts) 19 year veteran. He turned 42 last week.  He has a Super Bowl ring.
• Garrett Hartley (Saints) He has only been an active kicker in the NFL for 13 regular-season games and two playoff games. He is only 23. But he is definitely the hotter of the two…. just saying.

The Game of Football

XI. Players & Positions You won’t make it through the game without hearing things like “Wide Receiver” “Defensive Linemen” “Receiving Team” “Running Back” and my personal favorite “Tight End.” So Brush up on some players & positions basics before you tune in!

XII. Football Basics: How many men are allowed on the field? How long is a quarter because they feel like they are an hour each! What’s offense and defense? Get some Football 101 before the big game!

XIII. Key Football Terms: Everything from what a pigskin is to football’s version of the “bend and snap” so you can translate all the football speak into real people speak. I’m giving you 8 key ones for this game but here are the rest of the football terms to know!

• XIV. Audibles: You are definitely going to hear the word “audible” or “calling the audible” throughout Super Bowl XLIV because Peyton Manning is legendary for them. Usually before the players line up for the play, they huddle up and discuss their play options. But, Peyton doesn’t. Instead, he gets up to the line of scrimmage and announces the play then by calling it out out loud (or, audibly) to his teammates. But if he says it, doesn’t the other team know what they are going to do? No. It’s all in code!

• XV:  Hurry Up Offense: The Colts are known for their hurry-up offense. This means the offense does not huddle up to discuss the options. Instead, they go right back to the line of scrimmage and call the play from the line. This forces the defense to hurry up to the line too and leaves little time to substitute players and communicate effectively between coaches and players.
• XVI: Reading the Defense: This is something all quarterbacks and offensive players must do. They look into the opposing team and try to guess what they are thinking. Peyton is the master at this and you will hear this discussed ad nauseum. He’ll check the formation and spot the weaknesses and then change the play (calling the audible!) right then to prey on that weakness.
• XVII: The Blitz : Ah the blitz. This is something I finally understand. The definition I once read was that its “when the defense rushes against the offense to get the quarterback.” How that is different from any other play, was beyond me. But now I can break it down, thanks to my buddy Erik and his bucket of beer nuts that he dumped on the table to illustrate.  The defense shifts to have an open man that can sneak through the open hole to get the QB.
• XVIII: The Pocket: Watch the quarterback after the ball is snapped and he is getting ready to pass. You will notice the rest of this team creating a semi-circle around him as they try to block the defense that is coming for the ball.  That area behind the the circle to the QB is called “the pocket.”  You may hear them say “he is out of the pocket” which means the QB is out of the safe-protection of his guards.
• XIX  The Drive When the offensive team takes possession of the ball, it is called their “drive.” It is the series of plays that begins at the time the offensive team takes possession of the ball until they either score or turn the ball over to the other team.
• XX: The Play: Every time the ball is put into motion, it is considered a play.
  • Things you may hear the announcers say:
  • “The 10^th play of the drive”
  • “A seven minute drive” means the team has had possession for seven minutes in a row.

• XXI.  Downs: The offensive team gets 4 chances to move the ball 10 yards down the field. Each chance is a “down.”  If they don’t advance 10 yards in 4 tries, the ball goes back to the other team. Kinda like baseball: you have three outs per side before you give the ball back to the other team. Most of the time, teams only use three of their four tries. On the fourth try, they kick the ball as far away as possible. Why? Because if they try the fourth time and do not succeed, the other team gets to take over the ball right there. Meaning they would be closer to being able to score.
• XXII. The Two Minute Warning: This occurs at the end of each half, signaling that the half is winding down. The warning is actually a time-out for both teams, without charging either team for the pause of game.

XXIII: Common Rules & Stupid Football Penalties: Especially in a championship game, it seems like there are a million penalties and. Each foul, or rule breaking, has a penalty assigned to it. Penalties can be on the offense or the defense.

• XXIV: The Flags on the Play:  One fun game to play would be to count how many times they say “there is a flag on the play.” A Flag on the play is the way the referees signal that there has been a penalty or a broken rule occurred. Why a flag? I have no idea. But they will throw a bright yellow flag on the field before announcing the penalty.
  • A red flag on the field, however,  is a challenge. A coach can throw the red flag if they believe the referees were wrong with their call or if they thing the refs missed something important. However, they have to be very strategic in this because if the “ruling on the field stands” (meaning the refs were right afterall) then the team that called the challenge has one of their time-outs taken away (they usually say “charged a time-out” which sounds like the team has to go sit in the corner for undermining the refs but they don’t!)
• XXV:  The Penalty is Declined: Sometimes after a foul you hear the refs say “The Penalty is declined.” I never could understand that!  If the other team f’ed up, don’t you want them punished? This is kind of a long explanation that I’ve already written about once, so I’m going to send you here to fully understand. I highly recommend reading it because this is something you hear throughout the game and it’s really interesting on why team’s will decline a penalty.
• XXVI: Pass Interference: This is a huge penalty in a close game. This is when the defense touches, tackles or in any way impedes an offensive intended receiver from receiving a catchable pass before the ball has not yet been touched by any other player. Yes, the defender can hover close and stalk the receiver, but he can not make contact with him until the ball has been touched. If the ball has been touched—all players are fair game! This gives the offense an “automatic first down,” even if the pass was not completed.
• XXVII: False Start Once the players are in position on the line of scrimmage, the offensive line is not allowed to move  until the ball is snapped. If they do, they get a false start, which is a 5 yard penatly. If they were first and ten before the foul, they would now be first and 15. Why does this happen so often? Because it’s not as easy as it looks, at all. The snap requires precision timing and execution by all players and even a split second early throws it all off.
  • Defensive False Start: is called encroachment. It’s when the defense moves prior to the snap.

The Field

XXVIII. The Red Zone: The red zone begins 20 yards before the end zone. It’s when the offense becomes a real threat to score. Just to clarify, the field itself is not painted red. It’s just an expression! Sometimes the announcers will highlight the area digitally but it’s not really there.

XXIX. Field Goal Range (Kicking Distance) During the game you’ll hear the announcers saying “trying to get in field goal range.” That is usually around the 35 yard line. Most kickers can kick the ball at the right arch and height about 50ish yards away. But, keep in mind, the ball is kicked 7 yards away from the line of scrimmage. So if the ball is on the 35 yard line, the kicker is kicking from the 42 yard line. And, remember, the end zone is a full 10 yards and they still need the height to make it over the goal post. So if they are kicking from 35 yard line, the kicker is actually kicking from 52 yards away.

The TV Guide

XXX. The Handy Dandy Clock, Score, Downs TV ToolBar Sometime in the dawning of the tech era we are in, some brilliant person came up with the NFL score banner that runs on the top of the TV screen during games. The toolbar has the game clock, the play clock, the quarter you are in, the score of the game, what down it is and how many yards there are left to go.  Which is great if you know how to read it!

• Score: Tells you the score of the game. The visiting team is always listed first and the home team second. The teams are abbreviated to fit. (Remind me to tell you the story about how I thought I was watching the Arizona CARdinals play for about 10 minutes wondering where Kurt Warner was until I realized I was watching the CARolina Panthers….)
• Game Clock vs. Play Clock: The game clock ticks down the 15 minutes of each quarter. The play clock, on the other hand, ticks off the time that the offense has to put the ball in play. They have 40 seconds from the time the previous play was completed to start their new play. It is also called the “delay of game timer” because if they fail to get the ball in motion, they will be penalized with a delay of game call.
• Usually next to the Game Clock will be “1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th” That does not mean “down” it signals what quarter the game is in. Sometimes the playclock will also be on the top bar, not randomly on the screen!

XXXI. The Little Yellow and Blue and Red Lines on the Field: Don’t really exist. They are digitally added by the cable companies to illustrate to viewers where the line of scrimmage and 1st down lines are. How people watched football on TV before this technology is beyond me! See that arrow up there in that picture that says 2nd and 9? That’s one example of the digital lines on the field!

XXXII. The Super Bowl Commercials Just because you are actually paying attention to the game this year doesn’t mean you can’t still watch the awesome Super Bowl commercials! Although watching both the game and the commercials makes it really hard to schedule potty breaks! Super Bowl Ads are the most coveted TV advertising spots of the year so there are always some great stand outs! Check out last years doozies!

The Indianapolis Dreamy Blues

This blue and white cocktail is the perfect way to show love for the Colts! This football cocktail is like a chocolate covered orange even though it’s blue and white! I’ve seen it made as a shot or a martini. The trick to making sure the liquors are chilled before pouring so they layer properly.

• Vodka – 2/3 oz.
• Cream de cacao liquor – 2/3 oz.
• Blue Curacao – 2/3 oz.

First Quarter:

Hot Corn Dip with Crispy Tortillas One of Indiana’s most favorite crops is CORN! Seemed like the best way to pay homage to their staple crop was with a hot corn dip complete with fresh crispy corn tortillas! This dip is hot, cheesy and very rich! It has jalapenos and cayenne pepper for a little kick too! YUM! Get the recipe!

Second Quarter

A slight story behind my choice…. I had a hard time picking a wing recipe for Indianapolis since this signature foods (corn, popcorn, breaded pork tenderloins…) don’t really work well for a chicken wing! Then randomly found this article about KFC advertising their new “fiery grilled wings” on fire extinguishers all over the city of Indianapolis and it amused me to no end. Now, KFC is not based in Indianapolis or anything (yes, I actually Googled ‘where is KFC based’ like a total moron. I bet you are thinking the same thing, “hmmm I wonder where they are based.” Well, they don’t call it KENTUCKY Fried Chicken cuz it’s based in California, now do they? Anyway, back to our regularly scheduled sentence….) but I felt a fiery wing was appropriate! But if you don’t agree, well, here are 17 More Unique Wing Recipes

Chipotle Grilled Wings : A slight smokey heat to them, enhanced by grilling, not frying these wings. KFC’s secret recipe involved marinating the wings in lots of smokey hot peppers before grilling it. What I love is that the sauce and flavor is grilled into the wing and it’s not as messy. Although I do love licking my fingers after a sauce covered wing!   Get the Recipe

HALFTIME

Indianapolis Colts Chipotle Pork Cheeseburger Indiana is famous for their breaded pork tenderloins and I do have a recipe for those right below, but I also found this chipotle pork burger that sounded so delicious, I had to add it to the menu! The avocado and tomatillo give a light freshness to the dish. I also recommend blending the avocado and tomatillo into the mayo with some lime, cilantro and garlic for a refreshing sauce! It may not be traditional Indianapolis food, but I think of it as a 5 star restaurant spin on the fried breaded pork tenderloin!

• 1 lb ground pork (not lean)
• 2 teaspoons minced chipotle in adobo plus 1 teaspoon adobo sauce
• 2 garlic cloves, forced through a garlic press
• 4 slices Muenster cheese
• 4 hamburger buns, toasted
• 1/4 cup mayonnaise
• 1 large tomatillo (1/4 lb), husked and rinsed, then sliced
• 1/2 small avocado, sliced
• 1/2 cup cilantro sprigs
• Prepare a gas grill for direct-heat cooking over medium heat; see “Grilling Procedure.”
• Gently mix pork, chipotle, garlic, and a scant tsp salt until just combined. Form into 4 (1/2-inch-thick) patties.
• Oil grill rack, then grill patties, covered, 4 minutes.
• Flip patties and top with a slice of cheese. Grill, covered, until just cooked through, 1 to 2 minutes more.
• Spread buns with mayonnaise and assemble burgers with tomatillo, avocado, and cilantro.

Indiana’s Famous Breaded Pork Tenderloin Sandwich You can’t talk about Indianapolis food and recipes without mentioning their famous breaded pork tenderloin sandwiches. People come from all over the country just to try one of these bad boys. (I’m assuming. I mean, what other reason is there to go to Indiana anyway? Besides the Indy 500……) If you want to make it the classic local way, you need to make the tenderloin about as big as your head. It’s not supposed to fit on the bun! That’s half the fun!

3rd Quarter

Normally I reserve the third quarter for great chili recipes but I found this amazing sounding soup that is actually local to Indiana and decided to go with it instead! But if you want something a little more hearty, check out the 19 Super Chili Recipes! I recommend using one with corn or pork since they are staple foods in Indianapolis!

CONNER PRAIRIE PUMPKIN SOUP
This recipe comes from a place called The Story Inn in a little town called Story, Indiana. But the real story is about Conner Prairie which is a really cool interactive history park about 30 minutes outside of Indianapolis. Peyton Manning’s new Wheaties commercial was actually filmed there!

1/2 c  Onions
3 tb Butter
2 c  Mashed cooked pumpkin
1 ts Salt
1 tb Sugar
1/4 ts Nutmeg
1/4 ts Ground pepper
3 c  Chicken broth
1/2 c  Light cream

Chop the onions and gently brown in the butter in a pan or kettle. Put
mashed pumpkin into onions in pan with the salt, sugar, nutmeg and
pepper. Slowly add chicken broth and heat thoroughly, but do not
boil. To serve, pour into a tureen and add the cream. Makes 4 to 6
small servings.

4th Quarter

Indiana Sugar Cream Pie Anyone from Indiana, or those who have just stopped in, will tell ya, you can’t visit Indy without trying one of their famous Sugar Cream Pies. It is one of the simplest desserts imaginable and has been around for centuries. It’s an Amish and farmhouse staple. Rich, creamy yet somehow light and airy….. and totally decadent. It’s almost like a custard, but without the eggs!

• 2 cups white sugar
• ¾ cups all-purpose white flour
• 1½ cups heavy whipping cream
• 1 cup milk
• 1 tsp. pure vanilla extract
• 3 Tbsp. unsalted butter
• Whole nutmeg
• 1 egg, beaten
• 1 open pie crust

Preheat oven to 450°F. Combine all ingredients, except for nutmeg, butter and egg, in a mixing bowl and combine using a whisk. Pour into pie crust. Drop small pieces of butter on the top of the batter and then grate fresh nutmeg evenly over the top of the pie. (You probably won’t need a whole nutmeg, but I recommend starting with a whole one so you can be sure its super fresh.)

With a pastry brush, brush the fluted edge of the crust with the beaten egg. Cook for 10 minutes at 450°F. Reduce the heat to 350°F and cook for 30 minutes. Cool pie. Refrigerate and serve chilled.

PreGame

New Orleans Saints

This fruity concoction is a fun interpretation of New Orleans’ fave drink: the hurricane. This recipe takes the hurricane from a tropical storm to a Cat 4!

* 1 cup ice cubes
* 1 fluid ounce light rum
* 1 fluid ounce dark rum
* 1 fluid ounce coconut rum
* 1 fluid ounce vodka
* 1 fluid ounce gin
* 1 fluid ounce Chambord (raspberry liqueur)
* 1 fluid ounce triple sec liqueur
* 3 fluid ounces orange juice
* orange slices for garnish (optional)
* maraschino cherry for garnish (optional)

DIRECTIONS

1. Fill a hurricane glass with ice. Add light rum, dark rum, coconut rum, vodka, gin, raspberry liqueur, triple sec and orange juice. Shake gently, and garnish with orange slices and a cherry, if desired. Beverage will be about the color of a pink grapefruit.

Saints Black and Gold Rising Cocktail

By John Byrd of the legendary Commander’s Palace. Commander’s Palace is one of the most prestigious places in the fun loving city. John created this complex drink in honor of the Saints!

1 lemon wedge
1/4 oz simple syrup
3 thin slices of cucumber
pinch of white pepper
3 to 4 chives
3/4 oz lime juice
1/2 oz Fee Brothers’ Warm Ginger Cordial Syrup
1 oz Gosling’s gold rum
1 oz Gosling’s black rum
24k gold dust (optional)

Squeeze lemon wedge into a cocktail shaker, and add simple syrup, cucumber and a pinch of white pepper. Cut chives into 1-inch strips and add to shaker. Muddle all ingredients then add lime juice, Warm Ginger Cordial Syrup and both rums. Shake with ice and strain through mesh strainer into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with two 4-inch chives and sprinkle 24-karat gold dust on top.

1st Quarter

Cajun Crawfish Dip Can’t get crawfish? No problem! Check out my Cajun Crab Dip recipe for a quick substitution that is sooooo delicious!

• 1 cup butter
• 2 bunches green onions, chopped
• 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley
• 2 pounds peeled crawfish tails
• 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
• 2 egg yolks, beaten
• 1 (12 fluid ounce) can evaporated milk
• 1 (1 pound) loaf processed cheese food,
• cubed
• salt and black pepper to taste
• hot pepper sauce to taste

1. Heat butter in a large pot over medium heat. Stir in green onions, and cook briefly.
2. Add parsley and crawfish, and simmer about 7 minutes, stirring frequently. Stir in flour to coat crawfish.
3. In a small bowl, mix together egg yolks and evaporated milk.
4. Stir into crawfish, and reduce heat to medium-low.
5. Gradually add cheese cubes, stirring continuously until the cheese has melted. Season with salt, pepper, and hot pepper sauce.
6. Remove from heat, and bring to room temperature before serving

2nd Quarter

Jamacian’me Crazy Jerk Wings:  Jerk spices are kinda like Creole Spice’s cousin so I thought that this would be an appropriate recipe! These little puppies marinate overnight in a potent marinade packed with jalapenos and Jamacian Spices. When they are done getting all happy in their spicy bath, they bake in the over for about an hour to really pack in that flavor and sauce into the wings. You are going to be craving some Ginger Beer or some Jamaican Rum!  Get the Recipe

Another option is to bake your chicken wings with just a little salt and pepper and maybe a splash of cajun seasonings. Then serve the baked wings with an yummy New Orleans Chicken Wing Dipping Sauce like:

* 1 (12-ounce) jar of refrigerated chunky blue cheese dressing
* ¾ cup Creole mustard
* ⅓ cup scallions, finely chopped (reserve a teaspoon of chopped green tops for garnish)
* 1 teaspoon Creole seasoning

New Orleans Saints Crawfish Burger

This unique burger comes from Mr New’awlins himself, Emeril Lagasse. You can’t go wrong at a New Orleans Saints themed party if you serve anything from Emeril and this burger is amazing! If you can’t get crawfish where you are at, you can make a regular burger and top it off with cajun remoulade sauce for the same cajun feel! But I highly recommend digging up some crawfish, shrimp or some maybe some lobster/crab meat instead.

• 2 tablespoons olive oil
• 1/2 cup chopped onions
• 2 tablespoons brunoise red peppers
• 2 tablespoons brunoise yellow peppers
• Salt
• Cayenne
• 1 pounds crawfish tails
• 1/4 cup chopped green onions
• 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley
• 1 large egg
• 1 1/2 cups bread crumbs
• 1/4 cup grated Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese
• 1 egg, beaten with 2 tablespoons water
• 1 cup flour
• Essence, recipe follows
• 1/2 cup vegetable oil
• 4 onions rolls, sliced in half and toasted
• 1/2 cup Creole Tartar Sauce, recipe follows
• 1/4 cup sliced hamburger pickles
• 1 small tomato, cored and thinly sliced
• 1 small yellow onion, peeled and thinly sliced
• 1 cup shredded iceberg lettuce
• 1 pound sweet potatoes, peeled and thinly slice and fried until golden brown and crispy
• 1 tablespoon chopped garlic

In a saute pan, over medium heat, heat the olive oil. When the oil is hot, add the onions and peppers. Season the vegetables with salt and cayenne. Saute for 2 minutes. Add the crawfish tails and continue to saute for 2 minutes. Add the green onions, garlic, and parsley. Saute for 1 minute. Remove the mixture from the heat and turn into a mixing bowl. Cool the mixture for 2 minutes. Add the 1 egg, 1/2 of the bread crumbs and cheese and mix well. Set aside. Season the flour, egg wash and remaining 1 cup bread crumbs with Essence. Form the mixture into 4 individual cakes, about 1-inch thick. Dredge the cakes in the seasoned flour. Dip each cake in the egg wash, letting the excess drip off. Dredge the cakes in the bread crumbs, coating completely. In a large saute pan, over medium heat, add the vegetable oil. When the oil is hot, pan-fry the cakes until golden about 3 to 4 minutes on each side. Remove and drain on paper towels. Spread the halves of each roll with the tartar sauce. Place crawfish burgers between each roll. Top the burgers with the pickles, tomatoes, onions, and lettuce. Serve each burger with the fried sweet potato chips

3rd Quarter

Geux Saints Gumbo

This is the one and only time I’ll say “Forget Chili!” in a football party recipe post. But in this case, forget the chili and give me some gumbo! If you are “Geux Saints!” you can’t have a party without serving a gumbo. It is quite possibly the most signature dish of Louisiana. Now, everyone likes their gumbos a little different. I’m going to send you over to Paula Deen and Emeril for some great gumbo recipes. The most important part of making an authentic New Orleans Gumbo is the roux. So what’s a roux? Hmmm…. how to explain this.

Okay. So you know when you make gravy at Thanksgiving and you can’t just throw in a teaspoon of flour into the gravy at the end to thicken if cuz it would be a clumpy gross mess? Instead, you take a few teaspoons of flour and throw it into the pan that the turkey just came out of along with a little bit of turkey grease before you start the gravy. With that flour/oil mix you blend it all together and scrape up all those yummy bits that are left in the pan for extra flavor. When that flour/oil turns into a pasty consistency and starts to bubble, you add water to start making the gravy. That flour helps to make the gravy nice and thick.

Well, that’s a roux!  Traditional folks say that the roux needs to be super dark but that really all depends on how you like it. Emeril has a great guide about How to Roux at the bottom of that recipe.

4th Quarter

Saints Little Drops of Heaven Beignets

French for “fritter” or fried donut, beignets are the hottest thing to eat in the morning—or any time of day—in New Orleans. These little drops of fried heaven are of my favorite things in the whole world—and I’ve never had one in the French Quarter! I just make them myself. These fritters are square, not round, and they are a puffed donut rather than one with a hole in the middle. Traditionally they are covered in powdered sugar. But I’ve seen them filled with or topped with fruit, chocolates, regular sugar….whatever you heart desires! Get the recipe!

The History of the Beignet

Mardi Gras King Cake If you aren’t planning on making a football shaped cake or football decorated cupcakes for your Super Bowl Party, then I highly recommend this Mardi Gras King Cake. This is one of the grand traditions of New Orleans and no Saints party should go without a King Cake! So the 2010 NFL Pro Bowl features all of the league’s fan favorite players. Personally I think it would be better if it featured the league’s hottest players! Last year I did the NFL All-Hottie Pro Bowl Team featuring the sexiest players of the AFC and the NFC. This year I think we’ll do something a little different: the NFL All-Hottie All-Quarterback Team! (don’t laugh! My2009  NBA All-Star, All-Shoe Team is one my most popular articles and hit the front of the Bleacher Report AND Yahoo! Sports).

To be an NFL QB, I think you need to be an amazing leader, have a fantastic rating, and be super hot. I’m sorry but I just don’t want to look at an ugly QB. Mock me, laugh at me, scorn me for being girl who rocks pink jerseys and appreciates the hot men of sports. But let’s face it, guys would be pretty pissed if the cheerleaders were ugly, right? There are even studies out there showing that Sexy QBs make the Best QBs!

Originally this was going to be 17 Hottie NFL Quarterbacks….one for every Sunday in the fall! But it turned into like 22 or 23 Hotties. So think of it as one for every Sunday in the fall….and some extra bonuses to get you through the post-season playoffs and Super Bowl!
